GNR BR Class 1 Atlantic 62822 (Weathered) Bachmann Model locomotive, in British Railways black, weathered effect.

History of the loco: The GNR Chief Mechanical Engineer, H.A.Ivatt, having developed a small C2 Class 4-4-2 locomotive, decided to build on the success of this design by developing and building a larger boilered C1 Class locomotive. The first of these, No. 251, was released from Doncaster works in December 1902. This locomotive featured a number of upgrades, including a new boiler that increased the evaporative heating surface by 72% in comparison to the smaller type and a wider firebox. Such was the success of this design, that over the next 8 years, 90 more were built. The Atlantics received further modifications from Ivatt's successor, Sir Nigel Gresley - who added superheaters and piston valves - and from the outbreak of WW1 to the late 1930s in particular these C1 locomotives had notable success hauling mainline express trains on the LNER. The C1 Atlantics' hauling of Pullman trains was particularly famed; for instance No. 4404 took charge of a 585 ton express on an 83-mile stretch from Grantham to York and completed the journey in just 88 minutes. Gresley's work improving the performance of the C1 Atlantics had a major influence on the design and development of the next generation of powerful locomotives, the hugely successful A1 to A4 series of 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives. Having worked hard during WW2, just 17 of the large boilered Atlantics survived until nationalisation and only two lasted long enough to carry the legend 'British Railways' on their tender. The last of the C1 Atlantics was withdrawn in November 1950 with the sole surviving example, No. 251, now preserved in the National Collection.

The BR Class 1 Atlantic 62822 (Weathered) Bachmann locomotive model measures length: 24 cm x height: 5 cm x width: 3 cm and is mains powered. The box includes the locomotive model, instructions and a warranty.
